Kiwanis Club of Ashland just celebrated 100 years in 2023. We are one of the oldest Kiwanis clubs in Virginia, dating back to 1923, and the only Kiwanis club in Hanover County.  Throughout our history, Ashland Kiwanis’ service projects have been geared to the community – Ashland as well as the balance of the county.  We believe our youths are the keys to our future and to the future of our country.  Through our many and varied service projects and programs, we try to promote, nurture, and guide the children in the county so that they, in turn, can build and make our neighborhoods the types of places we can be proud to call our own.

This is the third year that the show has been held at the Ashland Junction Shopping Center located at 167 Junction Drive, Ashland, VA 23005. It is May and there is always a chance of rain, so the rain date is Sunday, May 19th.

Celebrating a Successful Kar-Wanis 2022

By Greg Glassner
Into each life some rain must fall, the poet Longfellow wrote.
But owners of painstakingly restored, washed and waxed antique, custom, and performance
cars are not fond of displaying them in a drenching rain.

So the Kiwanis Club of Ashland postponed its first Kar-Wanis Car Show from Saturday, May 14
to Sunday May 15 at the Ashland Junction Shopping Center. And when the early morning fog
lifted the entrants and spectators were greeted with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s.

Although not all of those registering for Saturday were able to make it Sunday, about 36 cars,
trucks, sports cars and muscle cars from 70 years old to nearly new did make it. And proceeds
from the show and food sales benefit the children of Ashland and Hanover County, which is the
Kiwanis mission.

The People’s Choice award went to a red and white 1955 Chevy Bel Air owned by Cathy
Moore
.
Two sponsor trophies, the first by the UPS Store and the second by Mac’s Tire Pro, went to
Chris Carter’s 1966 Chevy Nova II and a 1966 Pontiac GTO owned by John Budesky.

Class winners were:
Class A: Phil Robinson’s stunning 1959 Ford Galaxie 500;
Class B: Earl Crowder’s 1948 Ford Coupe;
Class C: Terry Hoffman’s 1969 Ford Mustang;
Class D: Sidney Bryce’s 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS;
Class E: James Pitts’ 2011 Ford Mustang; and
Class F: Barry Wilkerson’s 2018 Chevy Camaro.
Trophies were also awarded for second and third in class.

Glass Castle Events provided a D.J. with “car music,” and the Ashland Kiwanis Club’s grilling
team sold burgers, dogs and cold soft drinks.

“Heading into the weekend we did not know what to expect from the weather and our decision
to postpone the show by a day worked out perfectly,” said Kar-Wanis Show Chairman Roy
Mills
. “We had a great turnout of cars, some great sponsors and several hundred spectators
enjoyed the show free of charge.”
